It is more like a small fortified city - with streets, squares, temples and courtyards, where life has been bustling for more than 1700 years. Built so that the emperor lacks for nothing, the complex combines luxury, security and a strategic location by the Adriatic Sea. Over the centuries, the palace has become a natural cultural and political centre, no matter what flag has flown above it - that of the Croatian princes, the Venetians, the Austrians or the Italians.
